Berwick-Upon-Tweed
Historic Town Walls & Ramparts
Berwick Ramparts
The more recent and fully intact Ramparts were originally commissioned by Queen Elizabeth I around the year 1558, designed to keep out the Scottish raiding parties who frequently sought to take the town for their own.
The Ramparts proved to be the most expensive construction during her reign, costing more than her entire defense against the Spanish Armada.
The fact that they are still standing today as England's last intact Elizabethan town wall is a testament to the abilities of the architects responsible.
Berwick Town Walls
This part of North Northumberland has a bloodied and hair–raising history, having changed hands between England and Scotland thirteen times.
The oldest surviving example of Berwick's town walls dates back to the era of Edward II. Although only some remnants are left today, their rich and blooded history is described in detail in the history books.
