Wildlife in the Borders

Coastal

Berwick-Upon-Tweed is well known for its Swans. Walk down Bridge Street and from the old bridge you will find good views of these beautiful swans and other marine life at the mouth of the River Tweed.

Down the Northumberland coast at Holy Island there is one of the UK's finest beaches with lovely rock pools full of marine life. The nearby Farne Isles are excellent for seeing puffins, arctic terns, oystercatchers and razorbills.

Likewise, to the north along the Berwickshire coast, St Abbs Head is also excellent for sea birds from April to October.

Inland

Follow the River Tweed inland to see otters, kingfishers and oystercatchers.

Nearby locations such as Dundock Wood by Coldstream provide a rich habitat with beautiful rhodedendrons.

Within the Northumberland National Park, just 30 minutes away, the College Valley is well known for its colony of wild goats. Please check their website for visitor information and guidance depending upon the time of year of your visit.
